Job seekers aren't the only ones who may say something inappropriate or botch a question during a job interview. A recent survey by CareerBuilder found that approximately 20 percent of hiring managers reported that they have asked an interview question only to find out later that asking the question possibly violated the law. "It's important for both interviewer and interviewee to understand what employers do and don't have a legal right to ask in a job interview for both parties' protection, " said Rosemary Haefner, chief human resource officer at CareerBuilder. "Though their intention may be harmless, hiring managers could be putting themselves at risk for legal action by asking [certain] questions, as job candidates could argue that some questions were discriminatory. " More than 2, 100 hiring and human resource managers throughout the United States responded to the survey, which was sponsored by CareerBuilder and conducted by Harris Poll Online. A number of hiring managers responding to the poll said they didn't know if it was legal to ask job applicants about arrest records.

In my about 10 years so far programming professionally (and around another ten years as a hobby), I don't think I have ever needed to implement a linked list. If someone asked me to do it during an interview, I might counter by asking if that's something I will be doing regularly on the job. For sure, there almost certainly are jobs out there where you will need to write more-or-less-cleanroom implementations of commonly known algorithms - like implement a linked list from scratch. But for most programming jobs, what specific value does it have for the company that a candidate can do it during an interview? Is it really so important in such a setting that the candidate provides a perfect implementation which handles edge cases correctly, reports failures according to common practice in the language or framework, and so on? Or can you overlook that and instead focus on how they actually approach a problem that they perhaps haven't been faced with in 10-20 years? When I interviewed for my current job, I had very little experience with the technology stack in use at the company.
