I have been reading around on the internet and but most of these questions relate to fixed term contracts ending during mat leave rather than the day before. This puts her down on statutory mat pay rather than the NHS mat pay which is a considerable knock down! and frankly, one of the only reasons she works for the NHS, the pay isn't great and the stress is pretty crappy. Furthermore, it gives no security to Ann for when she wants to return to work at the end of the mat leave period. So is this a common occurrence? I would like to think that the NHS would be above board and legal in what they do but this just seems like petty behaviour to save a few pennies. Unfortunately we do not have much of this in writing, I think we will sit down tonight and draft an email that outlines everything for her to send to her manager to agree to the timeline. That will give us some evidence that they know what they are doing. One option I can see is to try and extend the contract to the due date and then start mat leave 11 weeks before then but I am sure they will see that coming!
